Food Find: Dunkin Donuts Flatbread Sandwiches
You read the headline correctly: I’m recommending food from a donut shop.
The DDSmart menu at Dunkin Donuts is chock full of healthy eating choices, including multigrain bagels, English muffin sandwiches, low-fat blueberry muffins, and lite beverages.
My current favorite DDSmart menu item is the Egg White Turkey Sausage Flatbread Sandwich. The sandwich is made of an egg-white omelet with turkey sausage and spinach topped with reduced-fat cheddar cheese on multi-grain flatbread. One sandwich has 280 calories, 8 grams of fat, 19 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber.
The DDSmart menu also features an Egg White Veggie Sandwich, which is an egg-white omelet made with peppers, onions and mushrooms topped with reduced-fat cheddar on multi-grain flatbread. One sandwich has 280 calories, 10 grams of fat, 16 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber.
They’re both breakfast sandwiches, but are available all day every day. Of the two sandwiches, I prefer the turkey sausage version. It’s more flavorful and has slightly less fat.
My only quibble with the DDSmart menu is that it doesn’t offer a healthy side, like a fruit cup. It’s sandwiches, baked goods and coffee beverages. I like all of those things, but a healthy non-bread side item would be a great add-on.
In conjunction with their healthy menu options, Dunkin Donuts encourages physical activity by presenting a couch to 5K training program and helping runners find 5K events in their communities. Brings a whole new context to the tagline “America Runs on Dunkin.”
