Who is Mr. 300?

My name is Michael Holtz and, until recently, I weighed more than 300 pounds. I had since I was a senior in high school. There was a point when I’m pretty sure I weighed more than 400 pounds but I never stepped on a scale during those years. I was, however, wearing size 54 pants in college if that tells you anything.

Goodbye, Mr. 300 is a personal rallying cry and cause for celebration. I now weigh 289 pounds…and falling.

I’ve been on a journey to lose the weight for about as long as I’ve been Mr. 300. I’ve embraced the journey though and, this time, I’m mostly enjoying it.

I’ve rediscovered exercise. I love running, cycling, Zumba and more. I run marathons with a purpose–as an American Cancer Society DetermiNation athlete. And I hope to complete my first triathlon in 2012.

I also love food, which is why I weighed 388 pounds at my known heaviest. So, I’ll write about that too. Delicious food in moderation is not evil, and there are tasty recipes that also happen to be healthy.

One day, I hope to have the body of a 40-something Michael Phelps. I also hope to always be like John Smart, the 90-something Knoxvillian who walks 5Ks in his walker.

Until either of those things happen, the journey continues…

Thanks for reading.
